(Un)Subscribing MapHist |
IMPORTANT NOTICE: When REPLYING to a digest version, you MUST compose a NEW message, otherwise you bombard the list with a whole day of messages at once.
To subscribe to the digest format of MapHist and type this (and only this) in the body of your message:
subscribe maphist-digest
Note: if you want to receive list mail at a different address from where you sent the subscribe command, you have to add an e-mail address, thus
subscribe maphist-digest [your name] <your e-mail>
Important: to avoid all kind of error messages or failure of the majordomo-instructions, send your commands as plain text only.
How do I send my e-mail as plain text?
Outlook 5 and 6: Tools > Options > Send Mail Sending Format: Press radio button "Plain Text" |
Outlook 2000: Tools > Options > Mail Format Send in this message format: Choose in pull down menu for "Plain Text" |
Eudora Pro: Tools > Options > Styled Text Press radio button "Send plain text only" |
There is a confirmation procedure to be sure that nobody else can subscribe you to the list without your consent.
You will get two messages from the majordomo, the first:
Subject: Majordomo results -- >>>> subscribe maphist-digest **** **** subscribe maphist-digest [your name] <your e-mail> **** **** must be authenticated. To accomplish this, another request must be **** sent in with an authorization key, which has been sent to: **** [your name] <your e-mail> **** **** If the message is not received, there is generally a problem with **** the address. Before reporting this as a problem, please note the **** following: **** **** You only need to give an address to the subscribe command if you want **** to receive list mail at a different address from where you sent the **** command. Otherwise you can simply omit it. **** **** If you do give an address to the subscribe command, it must be a legal **** address. It should not consist solely of your name. The address must **** point to a machine that is reachable from the list server. **** **** If you have any questions about the policy of the list owner, please **** contact me. **** **** Thanks! **** >>>> |
And the second one:
Subject: Confirmation for subscribe maphist-digest Someone (possibly you) has requested that your email address be added to or deleted from the mailing list "maphist-digest@pop.geog.uu.nl". If you really want this action to be taken, please send the following commands (exactly as shown): auth **** subscribe maphist-digest [your name] <your e-mail> If you do not want this action to be taken, simply ignore this message and the request will be disregarded. If your mailer will not allow you to send the entire command as a single line, you may split it using backslashes, like so: auth **** subscribe maphist-digest \ [your name] <your e-mail> If you have any questions about the policy of the list owner, please contact me. Thanks! |
Just do what this message says, and send a new message
with in the body only the line starting with "auth" Use cut and paste
to get this entire line in the new message. In case you use reply and
delete all other lines, be sure you also delete the automatic "reply"
prefix symbol (usually >) of this line.
You'll get again two messages from the majordomo:
Subject: Majordomo results -- >>>> auth **** subscribe maphist-digest [your name] <your e-mail> Succeeded. >>>> >>>> |
And finally the welcome message:
Subject: Welcome to maphist-digest -- Welcome to the maphist-digest mailing list! Please save this message for future reference. Thank you. If you ever want to remove yourself from this mailing list, you can send mail with the following command in the body of your email message: unsubscribe maphist-digest or from another account, besides [your name] <your e-mail>: unsubscribe maphist-digest [your name] <your e-mail> If you ever need to get in contact with the owner of the list, (if you have trouble unsubscribing, or have questions about the list itself) send email. This is the general rule for most mailing lists when you need to contact a human. Here's the general information for the list you've subscribed to, in case you don't already have it: |
